New Season, Who Dis? Updating our Skincare with @mermeberlin

Do you ever wonder what your skin would say if it could speak? “It’s like you don’t even know me anymore,” is definitely what ours would scream right now. How about yours? How can you tell? Instead of using words, skin develops dry patches, breakouts or other symptoms to communicate that maybe, just maybe, it feels a bit overwhelmed by the seasons changing right now (or that it wishes it were back on vacation, in which case: same). In order to get a better understanding of our skin’s crazy antics, we talked to expert Claire Ralston of Merme Berlin, a natural skincare brand that’s been fueling our glowy, dewy skin fantasies since 2016. Claire — and here we feel compelled to mention that she’s absolute #skingoals — talks us through changing up your beauty routine for autumn, no matter what your skin (and you!) need right now.

Hi Claire! If summer ending wasn’t bad enough already, we also feel like our skin, hair and overall health have a hard time adjusting to the colder weather — what’s up with that?

I know, we are all feeling a collective sigh to say goodbye to summer. At this time, our skin often feels dry, dehydrated or dull post summer activities (usually from the sun and sea). The autumnal weather changes, dip in humidity and cooler temperatures can then wreak havoc on our skin’s barrier. This results in your skin becoming more sensitive, leaving us with chapped lips, dry patches, and scaly skin due to loss of hydration and increased inflammation. But don’t worry, a skin flare-up during this change of season is totally normal and expected. Now is the time to let your skin recover from a little too much fun in the sun, and prep for the colder months ahead.

How does your beauty routine change as the season changes? What’s one thing you’d recommend switching up as autumn hits?

Yes, sometimes it can feel like: “New skin, who this?” When the season changes, so does our skin’s appearance and needs. It isn't just the weather that affects our skin, but the constant change of atmosphere, from cold winds to heated rooms. So, we suggest replenishing your skin and strengthening its protective lipid barrier by swapping out your lightweight summer moisturiser and switching to a richer facial oil. Don’t be scared to use face oils! I know it seems counterintuitive to apply oils to your face, but hdydrating organic oils will slow down your skin’s production of sebum (which causes breakouts and acne). All skin types will benefit from the Facial Beauty Elixir – a rich-yet-lightweight organic rosehip oil that's packed withantioxidants and vitamins that stimulates your natural collagen production.

Ok, now let’s get a bit more specific: What would you advise someone whose skin and hair (and mind!) are used to humid, sunny weather and are now forced to return to grey Germany?

Keeping your skin hydrated in the upcoming colder months is an absolute must, especially after all the sun exposure experienced in the summer. To combat skin dehydration, it’s time to step up your serum game and focus on active ingredients. We recommend layering the Facial Collagen Serum followed by a nourishing hyaluronic acid serum, like the Facial Hydration Serum. Produced naturally in the body, Collagen firms and plumps your skin, while Hyaluronic Acid hydrates and retains water in your skin. This powerful duo , helps replenish lost moisture, giving you long-term hydration and smoother, plumper skin.

What about for someone who is seriously feeling the post-summer ‘back to work’ vibes (hello back-to-back Zoom meetings!) and needs some stress relief?

Two words: facial massage! To de-puff and relieve tension, try incorporating a light under-eye and all over facial massage for 1-2 minutes in the morning. The slip from a facial oil is essential so you do not pull or stretch your skin. Performing a facial massage helps boost circulation and detoxify through lymphatic drainage. It naturally increases your skin’s own collagen and regenerates skin cells to give you glowing skin. Plus, it feels incredible! Start by massaging your neck and décolletage with slow, circular movements (to stimulate your lymphatic system), then follow with long, light strokes from the middle to outer sides of your face. Pay extra attention to points of tension on your face such as jaw, eyebrows and forehead. Then drain the fluid from your face down to your neck. Bonus tip: incorporate a gua-sha or jade roller for even more benefits. Trust me, it’s the quickest way to glowing, radiant skin!

And how about for someone who maybe hasn’t been able to enjoy the outdoors as much this summer. How can they detox and get a lil extra boost?

If your feeling like you need to detox your face, then it’s important to start exfoliating 2-3 times a week to reveal smooth, new skin. You can use all the best skin products in the world, but if the dry, dead skin cells have not been exfoliated away, they will not be absorbed into the skin. Oily skin types should use a mineral-rich clay mask like the Deep Clean Facial Mask to deeply cleanse, balance and purify your face. For combination skins — try using the clay mask just on your T-zone to clear congestion. As for the body, I love dry body brushing as it gets the blood flow moving (best detox trick!) and follow with our Nourishing Body Remedy.

What are some things we can all do now in autumn to prep for — dare we say it — winter?

To prep for Autumn (and inevitably winter), I would try incorporating Vitamin-C into your skincare routine. This ingredient’s rejuvenating and collagen-boosting properties work to renew, plump and regenerate skin cells to give a more glowing, luminous complexion. Our Facial Brightening Powder is made from pure L-Ascorbic Acid (the most effective and potent form of Vitamin C), which helps to improve skin tone, texture and reduces pigmentation gained during sunny summer months.

Thanks so much! BTW, why is a soothing skincare routine so important? Any last words of wisdom?

Skincare shouldn’t feel intimidating or confusing. Strip it back to the basics - simple and fun! Gone are the days of a 10 step skincare routine or applying hundreds of ingredients to your face. Our minimal ingredient philosophy means that our products are stripped down to their 100% potency, without any hidden synthetics or chemicals. Always read your skincare labels — if you don’t know an ingredient, research it! Your skin is your largest organ and anything placed on it goes directly into your blood stream. Be your own skin advocate!
