I’ve lived in this new apartment for about 6 months and I mostly love that it’s flooded with light. There are 6 windows in our living and dining area alone! For me, the natural light of an apartment is super important.
That’s so exciting! There are so many interior styles that it can quickly get overwhelming and hard to decide on one. I personally love to use Pinterest as a source of inspiration. It’s full of Ikea hacks and upcycling ideas as well, which is great if you’re on a smaller budget. I would also suggest ordering samples for everything and checking whether all the colours and materials go well with each other: Order fabric samples, flooring materials and paint colours, put them all next to each other and see how you feel about it — in most cases you can get samples delivered for free.
My favourite motto is: “Pay attention to details.” I love using candles, whether it’s in the bathroom, the hallway or the living room. They not only smell good, they also make your place super cosy — and they are affordable. You can also place some pops of colour with decorative pillows without having to spend too much. I think it’s so important to give an apartment character and to have it reflect your personality. That’s why I recommend working with personal items, like nice albums, paintings, souvenirs from trips, an old camera, grandma’s porcelain or other items that mean something to you. That really brings an apartment to life. And I love mirrors! Especially for smaller apartments, I suggest working with long mirrors that make your apartment look bigger.
I would definitely check flea markets or eBay for vintage decorations. If you’re lucky you can find amazing, high-quality items for incredible prices. Most of my blue and white Ming-style vases are from flea markets.
I love my painting more than anything, it really holds an emotional value for me. Plus: The chandelier in my dining area. I saw a similar one on Pinterest but couldn’t find it anywhere, so I had this one made in Istanbul. This chandelier will follow me into every new apartment. I also love our wallpaper in the bedroom. I’m fascinated with chinoiserie and I really wanted a chinoiserie-style wallpaper. I still love it every time I see it. Unfortunately I won’t be able to take it with me if we ever move — but until then I’ll enjoy the view!
